Airline Passenger Photo ID Policy

The Justice Dept. put more meat on its refusal to disclose the official policy on requiring airline passengers to present photo ID, but the explanation hardly supports the general reason Justice advanced (nat'l security).
Apparently, the problem now with disclosure is that the policy is not a formal policy at all and in fact is just a "law enforcement technique." [So, to summarize: A Justice Dept. official decided it would be a good idea to require photo IDs, so he just told every airline to start doing it, and no one asked any questions about it until the Libertarian
John Gilmore, and when he challenged it, Justice thought the best
thing to do was bluff by saying the actual policy had to be kept
secret because to disclose it would harm nat'l security. Well, that's
kinda true. It does harm nat'l security. I certainly do feel less
secure today knowing that my Justice Dept. uses silly, tacky little
bluffs like that.] via: news of the weird
