Overheard at Starbucks

"Since fundamentalists have made their opposition to homosexuality and gay marriage a political issue, part of the Republican Party's national platform, are there now places in America where gays and lesbians are being forced into marriages of convenience?"

---"Being pushed back into their closets? Like in the good old days?"

"To avoid discrimination and violence."

---"I haven't read anything suggesting that the Republicans campaigns against the sins of homosexuality has had a positive effect on gay attitudes towards heterosexual marriage."

"Isn't that odd?"

---"You're wondering if such a hot political issue has social ramifications?"

"Or if the issue's more a Punch-and-Judy show; something for the rubes to harmlessly get worked up over."

---"It would be something if the Republicans' mission to preserve the American family through Biblical principles was responsible for a stampede of gays hiding themselves in loveless, faux, but legally sanctioned marriages."
